Interfaith Program on Redemptioon, Sunday, April 21, 2024
There was an interfaith program on redemption being sponsored by Temple Beth-El with the cooperation of the Social Action Committee for the synagogue. Temple Beth-El is one of ALIRP's interfaith sponsors. The program was held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 21 at Temple Beth-El with presentations by four panelists representing several of the member faith groups. The meeting will conclude with a reception. Festival of Trees on December 13, 2023
Festival of Trees was held on Wednesday, December 13 from 5-7 PM. Mmany wonderful groups who are connected to Canterbury including age level ministries were celebrated and highlighted, Sunday School classes, non-profits, etc. The evening will also included a beautiful live nativity – complete with animals and Baby Jesus – as well as a craft room for the kids to decorate their own miniature tree to take home. |

Little Amal - October 11 and 12, 2023
Little Amal is a 12-foot puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl who has traveled across 13 countries meeting more than a million people. She will journey 6,000 miles across the United States in one of the largest free public festivals ever created. She has become a symbol for human rights. |
Ukrainian Freedom Festival - August 19, 2023
The Ukrainian Community of Alabama invited the Birmingham community to attend the Ukrainian Freedom Festival that was held at the Independent Presbyterian Church (3116 Highland Avenue South) on Saturday, August 19, from 2-4 pm. |

Volunteers and partners gathered in celebration on Saturday, July 22, 2023. We were at the Trinity West United Methodist Church in Homewood. We wanted to thank all our volunteers for all they do for our asylum-seeking partners. We had international food, kid activities, music, and fun! |
Hoover-AHEAD Juneteenth Celebration - June 17, 2023 Hoover-AHEAD hosted its third annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 17, 2023, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Hoover Public Library. The free event featured speeches, storytelling, film screenings, drumming and dancing, performances by local high school choirs, and activities for children. The event celebrated freedom and commemorated Juneteenth, which paid tribute to the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. Outcasts United Book Club Discussion, May 16, 2023 ALIRP and the Inspiritus Refugee Resettlement Agency had a book club discussion on Outcasts United, a story of a refugee soccer team, a remarkable woman coach and a small southern town turned upside down by the process of refugee resettlement. ALIRP conducted a bi-annual Stakeholder Update meeting from 7pm-8pm on Monday, February 27 on Zoom. During the meeting, we introduced attendees to the new ALIRP board members, provided an update on various committee initiatives, discussed current ALIRP needs and opportunities, and answered any questions stakeholders may have. As a component of the Fall Fundraising Campaign, ALIRP was pleased to host the First Annual ALIRP Celebration. It was November 5 at Trinity West Church in Homewood (914 Oak Grove Rd). The celebration brought together ALIRP partners, volunteers, community members, and stakeholders to celebrate ALIRP's partners and share information about ALIRP initiatives. The event featured a silent auction, advocacy activities, a kids' table, and food, music, and dance by Diego and Zanaidet, two of our very talented and spirited Partners. We discussed ALIRP's partnership with Inspiritus to support Ukrainian refugees, our World Refugee Day Simulation in June, updated ALIRP partner information, and we answered questions. The Independent Presbyterian Church at 3100 Highland Ave, Birmingham, AL 35205 hosted a "Lunch and Learn" session on Tuesday, July 19 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm which will feature a presentation by Lynda Wilson, ALIRP President. Lynda discussed the history and current initiatives of the ALIRP and ways to become involved in our three-part mission of direct support, education , and advocacy to help refugees and asylum-seekers globally and locally. At Homewood Central Park on June 25, ALIRP invited people to experience what it's like to be in a refugee necamp through a simulated (immersive experience). This event was hosted by The ALIRP Education and Advocacy Committee and was co-sponsored by the Literacy Council of Central Alabama, UAB Institute for Human Rights, UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health, the Birmingham Islamic Society, and Helping Hand for Relief and Development. On June 1, 2022, the ALIRP Education and Advocacy Committee hosted a virtual book club on Zoom. The book, When Stars Are Scattered, is a graphic novel about a young boy growing up in a refugee camp. World Refugee Day - June 20 2023
World Refugee Day is an international day organized every year by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). It is designed to celebrate and honor refugees from around the world. People celebrated diversity and community at Homewood Church of Christ on Tuesday, June 20 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. This free, in-person event was a great opportunity to learn about different cultures and gain valuable knowledge about refugees. Book Discussion, January 26, 2023
The Institute for Human Rights at UAB and ALIRP sponsored a virtual book discussion on January 26, 2023. The book is by Dr. Phi Hong Su and is titled The Border Within: Vietnamese Migrants Transforming Ethnic Nationalism in Berlin.
