Opportunity for Public Comment

The Biden Administration recently proposed a rule that would make migrants at the southern border ineligible to seek asylum in the US if they (a) entered the US between ports of entry, or (b) arrived at a port of entry either before or without a pre-scheduled appointment, unless they can prove they were denied asylum in a third country they crossed through while traveling to the US.

This proposed rule would limit access to asylum and prevent people from pursuing their right to seek safety.  We know that deterrence policies like this do not stop people from seeking safety, but rather forces them to seek safety through more dangerous means and prevents them from ever truly finding the safety they’re seeking. Take a stand for asylum seekers and tell the Biden Administration to withdraw this proposed rule by submitting a comment to the federal register by March 27, 2023.

Assist with the Birmingham Migrant Transit Project
The Alabama Interfaith Refugee Partnership is organizing a community-wide response to assist migrants who will be released from detention centers in Louisiana and bused to Birmingham when Title 42 ends. ALIRP and its community partners plan to receive and assist migrants in arranging travel plans to unite them with their sponsors.

While Title 42 was not rescinded in the timeframe expected, we are confident that the need for our assistance will be realized soon.  Please visit this page for updates and register to receive information on volunteer opportunities.

ALIRP Stands in Support of Ukraine
Picture
The Alabama Interfaith Refugee Partnership stands in solidarity with the brave people of Ukraine, and encourages all to find ways to help provide humanitarian aid to the nearly 2 million people who have already fled for their safety.

The Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) program "provides a pathway for Ukrainian citizens and their immediate family members who are outside the United States to come to the United States and stay temporarily in a two-year period of parole. Ukrainians participating in Uniting for Ukraine must have a supporter in the United States who agrees to provide them with financial support for the duration of their stay in the United States."

The Birmingham Inspiritus Refugee Resettlement agency is able to offer assistance to Ukrainians who come to Birmingham under the U4U program.  Services offered include employment and early self-sufficiency, information and referral, and social adjustment.  For information please contact Elizabeth.Kurtz@weinspirit.org.
Here are some organizations working in the Ukraine who are receiving donations to provide direct humanitarian aid in Ukraine:
CARE
International Medical Corps
Red Cross
